Burma in Peril

One of our wonderful Department of Peace supporters has sent us the excellent request for peaceful action below. Please read about the current situation in Burma and take action by calling your Senators and Representatives. Every call they receive represents to them a thousand people who feel the same way but didn’t call. Be a voice for the voiceless. Remember to be polite and please also mention that a U.S. Department of Peace would address critical issues such as the situation in Burma with concrete information and advice workable strategies (www.thepeacealliance.org)

Burma is in peril today and has been since 1962. Thousands of Burmese monks, students and democracy activist have been marching strong in a peaceful protest again the dictatorship government for the last week. This is the government that has taken away all human rights from the people of Burma since 1962. Burmese people have been suffering from poverty, hunger, oppression, brutal dictatorship, rape, HIV and AIDS amongst other serious issues for the last 45 years!! The holy monks are taking action, standing strong for the people of Burma to bring awareness and attention to the ongoing sufferings that has claimed thousands and thousands of lives. Today, this peaceful protest has turned into a brutal and violent killing spree by the Burmese military government. The Burmese government is reporting 5 people dead but the real number of people they have killed since yesterday is well over 30-plus according to the truthful underground news coming out of Burma. Most of these killings have been of the peaceful and innocent monks. The government has ordered the soldiers to beat and kill the protesters including the holy monks. There are underground pictures coming out of Burma showing the monks badly beaten by the butts of the soldier’s rifles. Last night the military raided number of monasteries and have killed, arrested and beaten the innocent monks. Today the protesting monks are no where to been found or seen, this is a very alarming development. The only person that can bring peace to my country is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and HERO Aung San Suu Kyi, the rightfully elected democracy leader whom is under house arrest with invalid charges for the last 20 years. The Burmese people need your help now more then ever. The Burmese people need your support. The Burmese people need your VOICE. Please contact your local senate, congress and in addition please write an email to inquiries@un.org, The United Nations’ Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, urging to coordinate a strong response to the situation in Burma and to help free Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma. The peaceful and kind Burmese people fate is in your hands.

say “yes” to the

DEPARTMENT OF PEACE CAMPAIGN

to establish a U.S. Department of Peace & Nonviolence

* Legislation is currently before the House (H.R. 808) to create a Cabinet-level Department of Peace that would research, facilitate and articulate nonviolent solutions to domestic and international conflict. The Department of Peace would be led by a Secretary of Peace and include a Peace Academy on par with current military service academies.  Help bring this vision to reality.

September is International Culture of Peace Month, with literally thousands of pro-peace activities all around the world.  The Peace Alliance and grassroots Department of Peace Campaign are sponsoring this 2nd Annual Walk for Peace with walk-a-thons in communities across the country on September 15 (or during the 11 Days of Global Unity – September 11 (Patriot Day/Anniversary of Gandhi’s first nonviolent action) through September 21 (the official U.N. designated International Day of Peace)). Check the national website www.ThePeaceAlliance.org for additional locations and times, and more details regarding this event.  (See www.internationaldayofpeace.org for further background and activities related to this most important day of peace and ceasefire.)

** Spirit of the Walk for Peace

We are for peace and the Department of Peace, specifically. We are not against anything. This is an opportunity to model peace in all we do – to truly be the change. As such, we will have signs, banners, T-shirts, etc. that promote peace and the Department of Peace and are not statements of opposition. In this way, we will stand for what we have in common – for those things that unite us and create peaceful coexistence and understanding.

Vision for the Walk for Peace

We are here to celebrate culture of peace month, have fun, increase awareness and raise funds to continue to give life to our shared vision of a country where peace is the organizing principle. Nothing is more powerful than a shared vision, supported by mass action and money!

Peace Tour Needs Your Help!

The Peace Tour is home. It’s been an exhausting and amazing 3 weeks. People up and down the West coast heard about the Campaign for a U.S. Department of Peace for the first time. People stopped and thought about Peace and the real possibility of doing something about it. Publicity has meant the message has gotten press and attention for Peace all over the world.

Please help these guys keep getting this message out. They’re badly in the red right now even with sleeping in the van and selling CD’s on the street. Please help this message to keep getting out there.

The guys are really tired, but already making plans to go back out to the East coast. Please help this become a reality. If all of our MySpace friends gave just $1,00-not even the price of a movie ticket or a latte or even a drink at a dive bar- we could pay off the expenses from this tour and fund more Peace Tours. We’re working on setting up an amazing music outreach for Peace for bands all over the world. Peace Tour was extremely successful in getting the message out about the Campaign for a U.S. Department of Peace. We’ve had many, many bands and musicians interested in participating in carrying this message. We’re working on a program to provide networking, mentoring, and resources for thousands of Peace Tours from indie bands whose Peace tour are the places they regularly play to big national tours and concerts. You can be part of an amazing process for Peace.

Please visit our page and donate. We’ll send you a sticker or magnet and a graphic you can put on your MySpace that says you cared about Peace.
