Oxfam America Advocacy Fund: Hurricane Gustav Threatens Gulf Coast

Hurricane Gustav Threatens Gulf Coast

Almost three years to the day after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, Hurricane Gustav is threatening major damage in coastal communities.

Oxfam has worked in the region since the disastrous hurricanes of 2005, and it is still vulnerable – 35,000 people are still living in FEMA trailers, and recovery dollars have been repeatedly mismanaged by government agencies.

Your donation will help us intensify advocacy efforts on behalf of those whose homes and livelihoods are threatened, ensure a speedy and just recovery effort, and continue to fight for the rights of poor communities around the world. Please donate today.

Chalk4Peace IS HAPPENING!

http://www. youtube. com/watch?v=eCjATioFPCI

All around the globe, together we are decorating, dedicating and

declaring, in deep sincerity our collective call for peace.

Chalk4Peace is about our empowerment.

We The People, our global

culture, all people everywhere and our common desire to live in peace.

The Chalk4Peace project has already transformed the experience of

thousands of people attending demonstrations for peace and public

gatherings all over the

world during the past 3 years.

Chalk4Peace is both a tool and a

conduit for non violent public self expression,

and participation in the growing global movement for peace.

Chalk4Peace is an opportunity for all of us of all ages to make our

feelings known, especially the young, whose future is in dire jeopardy

as our global village falls faster and faster into the fear breeding

fear breeding fear spiral.

Our global culture is teetering on the edge of extinction.

No one person alone can turn this around, but together WE CAN!

“The Structure of world peace cannot be the work of one man, one

party,or one nation.

It must be a peace which rests on the cooperative

effort of the whole world”

… Eleanor Roosevelt

Our basic human instincts drive us to seek safety.

This is what this

chaos is all about.

Our essential human survival instincts are acting

out of context with the wider global cultural need resulting in

mistrust, fear and conflict.

Everywhere the media is bombarding us with WAR TALK, distractions and

negative belief patterns that encourage us to believe that the future

of our world is out of our hands entirely.

One place we still have communal access to, is OUR STREETS.

We can balance our GLOBAL CONVERSATION with collective self-expression

using OUR STREETS AS OUR MEDIA!

Chalk4Peace is one step, a catalyst that can transform our global

conversation as we the people, en masse make our statement that is our common

aspiration for peace.

MySpace.com: Read Bulletin.

START NOW! Just DO IT!

Carry some chalk with you, invite a friend with you, to chalk
inspirations on the pavement whenever and wherever you fancy.

Chalk is harmless, cheap and washes away within a few days.

Especially PARTICIPATE in the Sept 13th – 21st
GLOBAL Chalk4Peace ACTION!

Make it happen in your Community!

(Scroll down further for “WHAT CAN YOU DO?”)

Lets us turn our grey streets into a living river of colour and
possibility – With poetry, hearts, peace symbols, empowering statements, also
expressions of our frustrations and despair.

All will be seen for several days by thousands of people, then as they
are washed away by the elements WE CAN CONTINUE to find fresh places
to Chalk4Peace.

We don’t need to be an artist to Chalk4Peace.
Every statement, however
small or large becomes part of the amazing tapestry that is our
global future.

This unique event conceivably, could be the largest of its kind in
modern history.

It is a global effort that is happening.

We The People are spreading the word and making the effort to be a
part of this huge creative endeavor to bring Peace back into the equation.

It is our goal for at least one million or more of us to participate
with this sidewalk/pavement chalk extravaganza, at thousands of locations, in as

Harvest of Peace

Harvest of Peace

Save the Date!

September 21, 2008
Sunday 8:00AM – 12 Noon

Suggested Donation: $15.00

Please join us for this year’s Harvest of Peace celebration at the Shambhala Meditation Center in Eagle Rock. The Sakyong will be delivering his address in the morning and afterwards the SMCLA Directors will be sharing the vision for how we can purchase our very own building in two years! While it is traditional on Harvest of Peace to do local fundraising, this year we plan to make it a special occasion with a raffle, auction, children’s activities and a first rate catered lunch.

Harvest of Peace, held around the time of the autumn equinox, is an opportunity for local communities to gather, hear teachings by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, and celebrate the riches of our local cultures and heritage. The Sakyong addresses the international community through a live broadcast delivered through a telephone link with Shambhala Centers around the world.

[W]hen we say “harvest of peace” here, it is peace within ourselves. We feel like we belong, we feel like we actually want to participate in the community. That sense of peace in us is what is going to make a big difference. Not meditative stabilization and peace, we’re not particularly talking about that. But a sense of harmony. If we feel a sense of harmony with ourselves and the community, it’s going to naturally express itself. I feel that that is going to be one of the important binding factors.

—Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, Harvest of Peace address, 1999

Everyone is welcome.

Nearly 40,000 children in need of urgent assistance in Georgia :: U.S. Fund for UNICEF – UNICEF USA

Nearly 40,000 children in need of urgent assistance in Georgia

NEW YORK (August 22, 2008) — UNICEF today voiced its concern over the situation of nearly 40,000 children affected by the conflict in Georgia.

The UN agency warned that living conditions, psychosocial issues and nutrition had become threats to the well-being of displaced children.

UNICEF’s Representative in Georgia, Giovanna Barberis, said that according to UNICEF assessments, the collective centers where children live are not suitable for habitation. They do not satisfy minimum requirements for sanitation, hygiene and building safety. Most of the centers are located in dilapidated buildings, which often have no toilets, no glass in the windows, sporadic electricity and running water.

“The infants living there urgently need complimentary food, and the older children require nutrition-rich food such as fruit and vegetables. There is also a need for diapers and other hygiene supplies, as well as recreational equipment. Instances of head lice, chicken pox and fungal infections have been reported. There is virtually no regular health services, or access to medicine, nor psychosocial support”, she said.

The UNICEF assessment teams reported evidence of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder—such as wide-scale sleep disorders—among children in the visited centers. The majority of children were experiencing emotional distress, as many were going through very difficult conditions. Fears, insomnia, neurosis and headaches were common complaints reported by children.

Barberis stated that the trauma experienced during this period would have a negative impact on children and may have long-lasting effects.

In terms of specific health requirements for the displaced children, UNICEF reports there will shortly be a need for medicine and immunization services.

UNICEF response

UNICEF has been active in providing basic food, water and hygiene supplies, as well as bedding to the displaced women and children.

To address the psychosocial conditions of children, UNICEF will set up child-friendly spaces in collective centers in and around Tbilisi. These spaces will offer children care and protection, and will help them slowly return to normal life. In addition, child-friendly spaces can also serve as makeshift schools, while UNICEF will be working towards getting children back to school in time for the opening of the school year in mid-September.

Together with its partners UNICEF has agreed on the initial distribution of 400 School-in-a-Box kits, and 300 water and hygiene kits to collective centers in east Georgia. “The School-in-a-Box kit supplies will be used to boost the establishment of child-friendly spaces in collective centers, as well as to support initial psychosocial activities with children and young people,” UNICEF said.

UNICEF is also preparing to respond to immediate needs for complimentary food items for the estimated 4,200 displaced children aged 6-24 months in collective centers. Along with this, UNICEF continues to advocate for exclusive breastfeeding with the Georgian authorities, and has already expressed its concern over the large amounts of breastmilk substitutes that are arriving as humanitarian aid in the country.

UNICEF estimates that out of the 128,700 people displaced within Georgia, 38, 610 are children under the age of 18, and 5,700 are under two years of age.

About UNICEF
For more than 60 years, UNICEF has been the world’s leading international children’s organization, working in over 150 countries to address the ongoing issues that affect why kids are dying. UNICEF provides lifesaving nutrition, clean water, education, protection and emergency response saving more young lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world. While millions of children die every year of preventable causes like dehydration, upper respiratory infections and measles, UNICEF, with the support of partnering organizations and donors alike, has the global experience, resources and reach to give children the best hope of survival.
