Ben & Jerry’s Recognizes Aaron Voldman, Executive Director of Student Peace Alliance, as a Peace Pioneer

Aaron Voldman, Executive Director of the Student Peace Alliance (SPA) and a member of the Board of Directors of The Peace Alliance, was one of two nationwide winners of Ben & Jerry’s “Peace Pioneer” contest. The announcement was made on May 27, 2008 at its New York City Times Square Scoop Shop. The ceremony was part of Ben & Jerry’s joint effort with The Lennon Estate and Peace One Day, a non-profit organization focused on raising global awareness of the UN day of global ceasefire and non-violence on September 21st annually.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, award-winning actress and demonstrated peace activist, Jeremy Gilley, founder of Peace One Day and director/producer/writer of the Cannes-debuted film, “The Day After Peace,” and Roy Kerwood, original photographer from Lennon’s 1969 Montreal Bed-in, were on-site at the Ben & Jerry’s Times Square Scoop Shop to launch a John Lennon tribute flavor, “Imagine Whirled Peace,” and announce a new social mission partnership with Peace One Day.

COLCHESTER — The third annual peace pledge ceremony at St. Michael’s College came with a few new wrinkles Monday.

The noontime event, which began on the steps of the Chapel of St. Michael the Archangel and then moved inside, marked the 140th anniversary of Gandhi’s birthday. There was even a cake that read, “Happy Birthday, Gandhi.”

Student Mila Tsikhotskiy, of the University of Rhode Island’s Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies, wants fellow young people to put into action their cares for peace.

And Samuel Koroma wants war survivors to have help in finding inner peace. He thought of those like his sister-in-law, who fears the sound of Fourth of July fireworks because they remind her of planes dropping bombs in the Sierra Leone from which she fled.

Be an advocate for worldwide peace – The Underground

I am a spoiled child. And if you’re reading, it’s likely you are too. Why is that? For one, you were born in the most privileged nation on the planet. Second, it’s likely you grew up in a relatively happy environment, and third, we have never experienced a fraction of the hardship much of the world endures daily.

Not to fault you for your birth; I believe all people should be treated the same irrespective of their origins. But because we are sheltered, we see the world through a cloudy lens, fogged up by our ignorance and naivety. That perspective isn’t shared by those whose lives are marred and tattered from violence, conflict, and war.

Cabinet department would give peace a chance – Kansas City Star

Barack Obama’s election as president has breathed life into efforts for a U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich first proposed the Cabinet-level post in July 2001 — two months before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack. He had seen too much violence worldwide and wanted to create a platform in the executive branch to promote alternative ways to resolve conflicts.
