“Each of the great social achievements of recent decades has come about not because of government proclamations, but because people organized, made demands, and made it good politics for governments to respond. It is the political will of the people that makes and sustains the political will of governments.”
~ James Grant, former Executive Director of UNICEF.

Peace Day 2008

Dear Friend,

I hope this finds you well.

As we draw closer to this year’s Peace Day, 21 September, it gives me great pleasure to tell you about the new developments at Peace One Day. With the help of the global community, Peace One Day has made great strides towards raising awareness of Peace Day and inspiring people all over the world since its launch in 1999. However, your continued support is essential to ensure the ongoing success of everyone’s efforts.

Therefore, I’d like to respectfully ask you to make a Peace Day commitment again this year. In doing so you will continue to play an important role in helping to inspire others to take action so we can reach our ultimate goal of institutionalising Peace Day, 21 September.

On Peace Day this year, we will return to London’s Royal Albert Hall for our annual celebration. The evening festivities will include a gala screening of my new film, The Day After Peace, and performances by Annie Lennox and Bryan Adams. Jude Law will, once again, be a key speaker alongside a host of other guests.

Also on Peace Day, 2008, people all over the world will be playing football as part of our ‘One Day One Goal’ campaign. Through ‘One Day One Goal’ we hope to see football matches take place in all 192 United Nations member states. Each ‘One Day One Goal’ match will celebrate cooperation, unity and the power of football to bring people together on Peace Day. You can find out more about this exciting initiative at

Whether you plan to play football, attend a Peace Day celebration, say sorry to a friend, or anything else, whatever commitment you make for Peace Day 2008 please be sure to log it on our Peace Wall at By doing so you will help inspire others to do the same.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

Best wishes

In Peace

Walk for Peace in Southbay 9/15

National Walk for Peace Walk-a-thon in the South Bay

say “yes” to the

to establish a U.S. Department of Peace & Nonviolence

* Legislation is currently before the House (H.R. 808) to create a Cabinet-level Department of Peace that would research, facilitate and articulate nonviolent solutions to domestic and international conflict. The Department of Peace would be led by a Secretary of Peace and include a Peace Academy on par with current military service academies.  Help bring this vision to reality.

Department of Peace Campaign

September is International Culture of Peace Month, with literally thousands of pro-peace activities all around the world.  The Peace Alliance and grassroots Department of Peace Campaign are sponsoring this 2nd Annual Walk for Peace with walk-a-thons in communities across the country on September 15 (or during the 11 Days of Global Unity – September 11 (Patriot Day/Anniversary of Gandhi’s first nonviolent action) through September 21 (the official U.N. designated International Day of Peace)). Check the national website for additional locations and times, and more details regarding this event.  (See for further background and activities related to this most important day of peace and ceasefire.)

** Spirit of the Walk for Peace

We are for peace and the Department of Peace, specifically. We are not against anything. This is an opportunity to model peace in all we do – to truly be the change. As such, we will have signs, banners, T-shirts, etc. that promote peace and the Department of Peace and are not statements of opposition. In this way, we will stand for what we have in common – for those things that unite us and create peaceful coexistence and understanding.

Vision for the Walk for Peace

We are here to celebrate culture of peace month, have fun, increase awareness and raise funds to continue to give life to our shared vision of a country where peace is the organizing principle. Nothing is more powerful than a shared vision, supported by mass action and money!

Walker and Donor Registration FORM

Checks made payable to “The Peace Alliance” go to our national organization and support national grassroots effort to create a U.S. Department of Peace.
